According to Visayan myth, Manaul was the great lord of the birds, who was often view as a wise yet trickster spirit. One time after fooling the great gods Kaptan and Maguayan to battle, and thus creating the islands of the Philippines, Manaul roosted upon a great bamboo tree in one of the new created lands. From giant tree, he heard a scratching sound. Thinking it was food, Manaul broke the bamboo in half, and from it arose the first man and woman: Sikalak and Sikauay.
