Diwata is a term derived from the Hindu term Daeva or god. The term in both Filipino and Hindu context can be used for male or female gods. However, the feminization of the Diwata grew from the adopting of local female gods into nature spirits during the Spanish era. Example is the goddess Makiling became Maria Makiling. The concept of nature gods are now nature spirits, such as the European fairies, spites, pixies and nixes. Modern translations of Diwata have further enforced the feminine imagery.
