Description
Ang Kasal ng Bayawak / The Bayawak's Wedding
Pen & Ink on Paper
There is an obscure Tagalog folk tale that says if it is sunny and raining at the same time, bayawaks or monitor lizards get married on such days.
This belief has many parallelisms in other countries, such in Japan, it is the foxes that get married, and in Africa it is the hyena. Even in the Philippines, another variation is that they are tikbalang instead of the bayawak.
In this piece, the Maranao’s okir designs are widely use. The illustrations of the bayawaks are an affinity to representations of the salamander and the undine of western myth to give greater emphasis on the two elements of fire & water.

Lizards I love monitor lizards, they're incredibly interesting animals.
A very nice legend you said there, your culture is fascinating Very well depicted too.
